Three cheers for effort, Cyber Monday, but the real winner for big online shopping is the second Monday in December. And of course it needs a spiffy name to give it credence—Green Monday. No, online retailers are not shipping your merchandise via Pony Express in brown recycled bags. But they will welcome your greenbacks, after which the day has been named.
Green Monday is, by far, the leading sales day for online shoppers. Last year alone Green Monday raked in a whopping $881 million—the greatest online shopping day ever. Similar spending habits are predicted for this shopping season. Sales are up 19% to date from last year's numbers despite downtrodden reports of dismal spending. Going green this Monday is predicted to set a new record.
What does this all mean to you, the consumer? Big online discounts and free shipping from some of your favorite retailers. Amazon.com will increase products tagged for free shipping and eBay will issue cash back rebates through PayPal and Microsoft Cashback. Check FreeShipping.org for additional Green Monday savings on delivery and merchandise deals. Plus, Monday is the last day for merchants to utilize free shipping and have packages arrive in time for Christmas.
It appears that Cyber Monday will be promoted more steadily in the future to build sales, but so far Green Monday remains the silent sales winner. Stay tuned here to get updated information on free shipping before ordering. Catchy, made-up holidays are great excuses to spend (and save) money on holiday gifts.
Would a Monday by any other name sell as sweet?
