5 Ways to Buy a Cell Phone Without a Plan
|
|

Cell phones fall out of pockets and purses, drop down toilets and generally get destroyed in ways that are unimaginable (or maybe maginable). The problem you then face is replacing your phone at a cost you can afford without having to buy a new plan or massively extend your old one.
Frankly, you're going to have to pay more if you want a smartphone but, before you buy, make sure a warranty won't cover replacement or reduce the cost of a new phone. If not, talk to your provider about upgrades or rebates.
If you're not getting any help from your provider, here are five ways to purchase a new cell phone without buying a plan.
1. Buy an Unlocked Phone
An unlocked phone means the SIM card (Subscriber Identification Module) isn't connected with one specific provider. These "free-agent phones" work with with any network and allow you to select the service you prefer. You'll find these at places like Best Buy or Circuit City.
2. Buy Online
You'll aso find unlocked cell phones on eBay and Amazon.
3. Trade Up
If your phone still works and you just want an upgrade, check out TradeMyPhone, GreenPhone or CellTradeUSA. You'll have to pay to trade but often can find a better deal than purchasing elsewhere. You might also look on CraigsList, but this is an instance of buyer beware as there's no protection when you buy secondhand.
4. Ask Your Service Provider
Some providers offer what you might consider starter-phones for less than $50. They won't have all the bells and whistles, but they might tide you over until you're ready for an upgrade you can afford.
5. Try a Pre-Paid Phone
You don't need a plan with a pre-paid or pay-as-you-go phone. You just purchase minutes as needed from a service provider. These are the phones you see at Walmart or Target.
