5 Tips for the Savvy Online Shopper

Picture your last trip to the grocery store.  As the bread, milk, and eggs fly through the scanner you diligently watch the register.  Sometimes you’re accidentally charged an additional Lean Cuisine or yogurt from a scan happy customer associate… which is, of course, why you watch so closely.  Be equally mindful of online purchases and it will pay off.  Think about the following shipping and return questions before clicking “pay now”.

Does the merchant charge return shipping fees?
If the shoe fits, wear it…but what if it doesn’t?  Return shipping fees can be daunting for the newbie online shopper.  Good news is many companies offer flat rate return shipping labels that are deducted from your refund or billed to your credit card for and exchange.  Among the 850 plus stores tracked by FreeShipping.org, several even offer free return shipping; either for a special promotion, like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Sport’s Authority, or as a permanent policy.  UniqueHomeStore.com and Zappos.com always offer free shipping and returns.

How much is the restocking fee?
Keep in mind that when you buy large items, specialty electronics, customized merchandise, and fine jewelry, there will often be an additional fee to restock the product to make it fit for resale.  This charge ranges from 10-40% per item.  Also check return policies for each store as sometimes products returned after a period of time will incur a restocking fee.

Is there a separate handling fee?
Some stores may advertise free shipping but also tack on a handling fee.  A careful review of your shopping cart will reveal this, so before your final checkout look at all fees added above your total.  Most handling fees apply to furniture and other large shipments.

How much time do I have to return my merchandise?
Just as in a bricks and mortar store, you are given a trial period that usually ranges from 15-90 days of your purchase during which you can complete a return.  Read the fine e-print!  Some merchants state the period of return is from date of delivery and others from the date of purchase.   And after the return period, you may be issued store credit rather than a full refund.

Is sales tax included in my total?
Merchants frequently advertise a no sales tax purchase and it will always be reflected in the checkout.  Most e-tailers offer tax free purchases for delivery addresses out of their shipping site state.  This fee, if applicable, will also show up during checkout.

Know before you buy!  Don’t wait for the surprises to show up on your credit card a month down the line.  Look under the “About Us” or “Customer Service” link with the e-tailer, or chat online with a live customer service representative for details. To get a head start, many of the questions above are answered on this site for every store listed. Sign up today for emailed delivery savings at FreeShipping.org!
